Hermes, the Messenger of the Gods, was the son of Zeus and Maia, daughter of the titan Atlas.
Because Hermes was unusually alert from the time he was a child, Zeus gave him a baton wound with white ribbons and a pair of golden slippers with wings that enabled him to fly.
