The New Gods - Demeter

Demeter, one of Zeus' sisters, lived on the mountainous island of Sicily and was known as the Goddess of Agriculture, the protector of fields and harvests.

The greatest battle of her life took place when her daughter Persephone disappeared. After a long search, Demeter discovered that the girl was in the Underworld and that Hades had forced her to marry him. In a rage, the goddess cast a spell which made the earth so dry that no plants survived.

Zeus then declared that Persephone should stay with her mother for nine months of the year and reign beside Hades during the other three months.
